Orthodontic Retainers

Orthodontic Dental Retainer or simply Orthodontic Retainers are the second and an important stage in correcting misaligned (crooked) teeth and malocclusion. Generally, teeth should be side by side and upper and lower teeth should be one above the other. Teeth should be even, without gaps and of same color. But, such ideal situation is rare and a large number of people have problems with teeth alignment.

When is orthodontic treatment necessary?

An orthodontist doctor typically deals with three most common teeth alignment problems.

  • Misalignment occurs when side to side the teeth are not in line. Some teeth protrude beyond others.
  • Overbite means upper teeth jut outward beyond the lower teeth.
  • Underbite is the opposite. The lower jaw (and so the teeth) jut outward.

The net result of overbite or underbite is that the lower teeth do not lie directly under the upper teeth as they normally should. The condition calls for orthodontic treatment.

How the crooked teeth affect you:

  • The effect of the orthodontic problems can be easily imagined.
  • Cannot chew properly and under chewed food affects digestion.
  • Will not enjoy the full taste of certain items such as meat on bones, nuts, guavas etc.
  • Look much older than you are and the awkward appearance may be a liability at the workplace or in social interactions.

Orthodontic work is done, you may be fitted with orthodontic braces which over a period of time help your teeth to realign themselves. Once the malocclusion is rectified, the orthodontist will remove the braces and fit you with orthodontic retainers. The retainers ensure that the teeth stay in their new locations, i.e., “retain” the new alignment and looks.

Currently, three types of retainers are in use.

Hawley Retainers: are removable, last long and their color and design can be personalized.

Clear Retainers : are good for appearance as they are not noticeable but they do not last long.

Fixed Retainers: may be necessary if the teeth need stronger support to retain their new alignment.

Consult the Orthodontic Care Specialist to discuss the treatment plan.
